Artificial grass is becoming an increasingly popular option amongst homeowners looking to spruce up their gardens and keep them looking great all year round. Here we guide you through the process of laying artificial grass with our simple step-by-step guide, listing all of the tools you'll need to ensure you do a great job.

One of the biggest advantages of opting for artificial grass is the significantly low amount of maintenance required to keep it looking fresh and healthy. As artificial grass doesn't grow, there is no requirement to regularly trim the grass with a lawnmower or shears, meaning there is a lot less manual labour involved when keeping your garden in good condition.

What Tools Do I Need To Lay Artificial Grass?

The following tools are needed when laying artificial grass:

Hammer and flathead nails
A rake and shovel
A tape measure
A finely crushed rock
Whitewash sand
A compactor
Turf tape
A utility knife

Our Step-by-step Guide To Laying Artificial Grass

Step 1: Remove Existing Turf

Remove any rocks, sprinklers or debris that could impact the smooth laying of your artificial grass. Using a shovel, it is recommended that you excavate extra soil of between 70mm and 80mm. This base area should then be levelled out using a rake to ensure a flat surface.

Step 2: Compacting The Base

Next, you need to add a layer of finely crushed rock to this base area. This layer should be evenly spread using a compactor for ease. Spraying water as you go will ensure that the base becomes sturdy. Keep measuring the depth to ensure you meet the recommended sub-base depth of 15mm to 20mm.

Step 3: Roll Out The Turf

Next, roll out the turf and let it rest for a few hours to avoid creases. Cut through the turf with a utility knife to ensure clean cuts.

Step 4: Join The Pieces Together

Place the separate pieces of artificial grass as close as you can with a small gap between them so they don't overlap. Using turf tape, securely join the pieces together or follow the instructions given on the product you have purchased.

Step 5: Trim The Edges

Using a utility knife, trim the edges of the artificial grass that are protruding to ensure a clean finish. Do not trim too much as this could hinder the natural look of the artificial grass.

Step 6: Set The Turf

Using a hammer and flat head nails, nail the artificial grass in place around the edges with gaps of at least 25cm between the nails.

Step 7: Spread Sand Over The Artificial Grass To Protect It

Spread sand through your freshly laid artificial grass with a rake. It is recommended that around 12kg of sand is used per square metre of artificial grass.
